Martin Bell From The Fourth Dimension (2011) is Martin's second self-published book, which follows from the mind-boggling medley of My Birthday Party (2008). Fourth Dimension is filled with Martin’s full-color collages, photographs and impenetrable byzantine drawings documenting the stray ephemera of Martin’s world. A continuing theme is Martin’s obsession with the orb phenomena (those strange circular anomalies that appear in low-light digital photographs, that some associate with paranormal activity). The intensity of Martin’s collation suggest at cryptic connections within its depths. Look beneath or simply enjoy a hallucinatory fun-park ride through a very unique mind.

*Resigned to life as a trans regional/national/philosophical studio band, ‘The Sailors’ are no longer able to launch their own records. Melbourne representatives Hec & Vern will be playing as ‘The Octopus Brothers’. These tentacled gents have been busy of late supporting Ally Oop as members of the Hoopsters. They're taking the opportunity to steal a little of Ally's limelight for a quick and dirty launch of the Sailors new record. Ally, ever supportive and multi-talented, will be playing along on bass.

*ICECLAW is a side project of Jensen Tjhung (Hate Club, Deaf Wish) and  Nick Lane (This is Your Captain Speaking). They are joined by John the  Psychologist on vintage Arp Odyssey Synthesizer. 

(Tasmania Is An Anagram Of) I Am Satan takes the loose premise of  a Tasmanian Gothic. The exhibiting artists have been invited to take  their starting point from wordplay on 'Van Diemen’s Land' (Demon's Land)  and 'Tasmania' (I Am Satan), to produce an exhibition of works  interpreting a spirit far south of heaven. Their varied responses are  not intended to present a contained curatorial idea, but rather an  aggregation of ideas fleshed out through the invitational process. The  themes are inspired by jokey wordplay and cultural impressions of  Tasmania, as well as the general ambience of the Hell Gallery space and  areas of interest of it's founders, Jess Johnson and Jordan Marani.  Those being; "a fascination for the visual imagery of B grade horror,  UFO’s, comic books, falling towers, black holes, post apocalyptic  fiction, weird science and doom metal." The Board and staff of INFLIGHT  will be presenting works based on these premises as well as inviting an  artist (or group) of their choice to exhibit or collaborate with.

Hell Gallery will soon be heading to London to participate in NO SOUL FOR SALE at the Tate Modern - a festival of independent galleries from around the world. To pay for their private jet and snack tab, Hell will be hosting a fund-raising send-off on the 23rd of April. For one night only the gallery, side room, Hell Toupee and garden courtyard will be turned over to a selection of some of Melbourne’s most interesting and disparate musical agitators.

DUCK JUGGLER - will be creating an interactive installation of light, sound and ducks within the gallery. THE OOGA BOOGAS - Melbourne’s much-loved Garage band will play a rare show in the side room. Hell Gallery launches into 2010 with a drawing show that throws a wide net over the Mark Makers of the Universe. Three New Zealand artists will present a collective world of strange - a hallucinatory insight into the harmful effects of spending ones formative years on a small grey island whilst consuming a steady diet of bad-taste movies and science fiction novels. The night will also feature a special performance by two-piece band ‘SUPER WILD HORSES’, who bring their infectious blend of schoolyard chants and striped back banging pop. Finally, British artist Jon Hewitt will be reigning over the outer regions of Hell (Hell Toupee and the video wall) to commemorate his Australian experience before being deported back to London the very next morning. In early 2009, Joint Hassles were edged out of their gallery space in Northcote due to Melbourne’s inner-city rent hikes. On becoming spaceless the Joint Hassles artists have climbed out of the white cube and been making friends… hosting art events in bedrooms, backyards, public parks and music venues. In the interests of sharing, Hell Gallery decided to offer up its premises. Joint Hassles asked if they could bring a mate and a third gallery was invited to the party. Gambia Castle is a gallery co-operative based in Auckland, NZ. Sharing similar ideologies in community and collaboration, Joint Hassles and Gambia Castle will come together at Hell Gallery in a group show of over twenty artists.

"First trawl your area collecting up discarded materials. Start to build something from them. A shed. A shack. A fort. A dwelling. Whatever, it’s yours. Build it somewhere hard to find. Preferably in the forest but a city alleyway would suffice too. Hunker down and decorate. Make it safe. Surround the hut with booby traps and hang charms to ward off evil. Sustain yourself with meals of mushrooms boiled with bark. When you’re done with it walk away without looking back or push it over with your bare hands and stand back grinning at the big ‘WHUMP!’"

One of the greatest tricks the devil ever pulled was… just after smoko! Dan Moynihan’s latest exhibition In and Out, No Funny Business introduces us to two of his lesser-known passions; the heist movie genre and a fascination with lunchroom architecture and etiquette. Rolling on from the mountainous ambition displayed in his previous project (Still Sitting Still , Utopian Slumps, Jan 2009), Moynihan has devised elaborate ways for the installation to sprawl beyond the confines of the gallery. Dan’s multi-layered installations persistently attempt to hammer holes in reality, providing his audience a peek of alternative worlds. Perhaps even a walk through if it all goes according to plan.

Nick Devlin began his series of portrait projects in the year 2000, when he painstakingly depicted 100 images of perpetrators and criminals. This was followed by 100 portraits of artists in 2005. In 2007 he turned to authors. 33 1/3 is his latest instalment, consisting of 33 1/3 likenesses of musicians. Nick’s procession of human subjects are chosen as much for their flaws as for their accomplishments. His portraits en-mass are a stark homage to the exiled and revered of society; their flairs and failings.

The portraits display an equal regard for the methodical process of portraiture. The disciplined banality of such a project speaks of the failures of representation as well as the futility of trying to capture the human condition. A Beckett-like game that blurs the line between winners and losers, fame and its followers.

Only Human is the fourth solo exhibition from Brendan Huntley. Coming from a background in graffiti, Brendan now divides his energy between painting and sculpture. When out of his studio he spends his time indulging a love of vegemite and fronting garage rock band Eddy Current Suppression Ring.

Working primarily with ink, pastel, paper and ceramics, Brendan probes the smokescreen of appearance by suggesting the existence of multiple personalities. For Only Human, Brendan has produced an assortment of upside down jugs, teacups, gravy boats, dinner glasses and other homely vessels, infusing them with lifelike sensibilities. By twisting the traditional techniques of ceramic sculpture, Brendan explores our joys, fears, thoughts and observations of life. Questioning what it is to be human by exploring what it is to be non-human.

Through his lyrics or artwork, Huntley can’t help but let us know his concerns. His work is marked by a compulsive truth and honesty that speaks of what it is to be human and what it is to be outside looking in.

Straight Edge was originally exhibited in OLD SKOOL (NEVER LOSE THAT FEELING) at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art in December 2007. Robert Cook wrote: Stuart’s practice is wild and freeform, including both massive wall paintings in a Beatle Bailey aesthetic and, more recently, quirkily sculptural outings that investigate the discursive and emotional status of culture-making. His work for this show is/are presentation of the Minor Threat logo. Minor Threat were a band led by Ian MacKaye and established in Washington DC in 1980. They were known for songs that were fast, furious and lasted about one and a half minutes. They were punk but faster and tighter, maybe they were new punk or something. Certainly, they were 'anti consumerism’ in a big way. They initiated the‘straight edge’ movement: no sex, no drugs, no drinking, no f__king. That was the deal. They would not give interviews in magazines that had ads for cigarettes or alcohol. They were keeping it real, with their music and social actions like selling cheap CDs and having cheap door sales. It was about keeping the spirit of music alive and real instead of following the usual idea about success, moving on to stadiums,getting ads for consumer goods, etc.

Here's what Dylan Rainforth wrote about Hell's inaugural show on the threethousand review page (http://www.threethousand.com.au). Tony also got a review in the Sunday Magazine of the Age (Preview 24th Feb), written by Penny Modra.

'Welcome to Hell.' Quick sketch of a cinematic cliché: Hard-as-nails Drill Sergeant welcomes green-as-grass bunch of recruits to bombed-out battlefield. He knows, and so do we, that half of them will be dead by the end of the movie and that the other half will have learnt some hard-earned lessons, emerged as heroes, etc and-so-forth.

That's what 'Welcome to Hell' makes me think of. But if you hear it this Friday as you enter the Gates of Hell, just down the lane behind the Coles on Swan Street, it's probably just owners Jess 'Queen of Hades' Johnson or Jordy Marani (such a yacht-rockin' name for Satan Himself) making you, you know, welcome. Welcome, to their brand-new art gallery - check out the art, partake of the delicious BBQ (aka the Eternal Flames of Damnation) and grab a cold beer. It's nice here.

And all the best people go to Hell. Even the Prince of Darkness turned out to be a pleasant chap when I popped in the other day. The PoD, aka Tony Garifalakis, has cooked up an absolute blinder of a first, inaugural, premiere, debut, maiden show - all about doomsday sects and murderous messianic cult leaders. How apt. So, if there was ever any doubt, it's now official - the devil not only has the best tunes but the best art too.

Hell Opens Up

Hell Gallery was founded by artists Jess Johnson and Jordan Marani, who both work installing other peoples art for money. Hell was built on the ground floor of their house using salvaged materials from larger art institutions. Hell is open for exhibitions, launches, screenings, performances and cooking demonstrations. All proposals to Hell must be handwritten, preferably in code on soiled restaurant napkins. Accompanying documentation should be in totally incompetent cartoon form. Or you can just ask nicely. We will see what we can do.
